About Machair Records
Machair Records was set-up in 2006 to produce and release the music of Julie Fowlis and Éamon Doorley.
The word "Machair" (pronounced with a "ch" as in the word "loch") is a Gaelic word which describes rich and fertile low-lying land. Almost half of all Scottish machair occurs in the Outer Hebrides and it is one of the rarest habitat types in Europe. It is a fragile environment which is under threat, a little like the music which is produced on this label.
Machair Records have released four albums to date:
UAM – Julie Fowlis (2009)
Featuring contributions from Eddi Reader, Phil Cunningham and Sharon Shannon, among others. It is the first album from Julie Fowlis to contain English lyrics, contributed by Eddi Reader on a bilingual version of folk song Wind and Rain.
Dual - Éamonn Doorley, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Julie Fowlis and Ross Martin (2008)
The Dual album was planned to project the similarities and differences between the Irish and Scottish Gaelic song traditions.
cuilidh – Julie Fowlis (2007)
Julie's second album "cuilidh" was voted "Album of the Year 2007" at the Scots Trad Music Awards and won Julie Best Folk Singer Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Music Awards. The album features a host of first-class musicians including Éamon Doorley, John Doyle, Chris Thile, John McCusker, Mark Kelly, Ewen Vernal, James McIntosh, Martin O'Neill and Ross Martin.
